Motherhood: Hello Solids – Part 2!

gerberxthiswildheart4

It’s been an interesting few months since Miles started solids and puréed foods and he is absolutely living his best life over here. You better believe it. I’ve loved watching Miles try all different kinds of foods and he definitely shows signs of what he loves and dislikes too. Miles especially enjoys the flavour combinations available in the GERBER Organic Purées I’ve been having him try.

The foods at Miles’ stage still need to be soft and easily mashed, with an introduction to learning to self-feed. We’ve tried pretty much anything you can think of so that we can see what he enjoys and if he’s allergic to certain kinds of foods. You can tell he loves something when he signals for more vocally or by reaching for the spoon/package. You can also tell when he dislikes something when he pushes food out of his mouth.

Now that Miles has tried many foods on their own, I’m sharing some suggestions on how to introduce more flavourful combinations, especially with those foods that baby might not like on his own!

  1. Find various recipes that include the foods that your baby may not show interest in. My success comes from adding small amounts in the recipe first, then adding larger amounts after baby has shown interest in it.
  2. To find inspiration in flavourful combinations, I often take a walk down the baby food aisle. This helps me to find out what is offered for baby and get ideas of what flavours work well together. Miles really didn’t like kale on its own, but I’ve tried Gerber’s Apple, Kale, Fig organic purée, and he absolutely loved it. Their unique smart flow spout means less mess, and with the transparent packaging, I can see how much Miles is eating.  Hint, their packaging shows what portion of each ingredient goes into each pouch making it easy to understand how much nutrients your baby is taking in.
  3. Have fun with creating new recipes for baby. From what I’ve experienced, it’s a lot of work and requires some planning. Try and make foods you and your family would eat as well so that you don’t have to make too much work for yourself during meal time! For instance, make some spaghetti bolognese for the whole family, but make baby’s, without any salt, and puréed or cut into smaller pieces to avoid a choking hazard. This way when baby is eating with the family, you can all enjoy a meal together!

To to be honest, I’ve never enjoyed cooking for two on a daily basis but it’s been so fun trying new flavourful recipes for Miles. While I do love to experiment recipes from scratch, it’s not as convenient when we’re on our road trips or on the road for meetings and events. At times like these, I will carry with me GERBER Organic Purée pouches. I always give the flavours a try at home to make sure he enjoys specific ones and have him practice feeding himself. Once I know he loves them, I stick them in the car and in his lunch box when I know our day is going to be a little busier than usual. Plus the Smart Flow spout helps reduce the mess and Mile’s clothes stay fresh! I would do anything to ensure that Miles gets the nutrients he needs to grow strong and GERBER organic Purées alongside side healthy homemade recipes helps me to provide the best for him.
