Motherhood: 100 Days Celebration!

thiswildheart-baekil11

In Korean culture, there are a few milestones that families and friends celebrate after a child’s birth. One of them is called “Baek-il” or 100th day after a baby is born. The reason for this sort of celebration is because long ago, it was common that infants would pass away due to illnesses and very poor living conditions. It was so common that to protect babies, parents would even refrain from leaving their home with the child until 100 days! There are many traditions that are practiced on this day such as gathering of family and indulging in lots of food especially rice cakes! Of course with developments in modern technology and medicine, babies live past 100 days, however this celebration is still held today as a time of congratulations for the parents, family and baby.

This past weekend, we celebrated with our immediate family, Miles’ 100 Days. We’re finally getting a hang of this whole parenting thing, and we felt so blessed to celebrate the journey with our closest family members. After all, they say it takes a village to raise a child and I can testify to this! Not only have our families been there for us, they have been part of the journey. Miles is one lucky little prince to have such a loving family…if only he could smile in some photos for them though.

There are a few things that I DIY-ed and want to share that not all celebrations have to cost you an arm and a leg! One of the easiest things to make are cake toppers. I always love making these because they’re simple and literally cost me less than $2 to make with my Michael’s coupon in hand! I simply took a star cookie cutter, traced it over some stiff glitter paper, and then used a glue gun to stick it on some wood skewers. For the moon, I just hand drew the shape and repeated the same process as the stars to finish them off. Easy right? For Miles, I had also ordered him a little knitted crown but it didn’t arrive in time, so I had to improvise. I purchased a large camel coloured felt sheet, drew out the shape I was looking for in the crown, cut it out and used a button press for the back, but it can easily just be closed off with a glue gun! Again, that cost me $2 with my coupon to Michaels!
